Hi, I am in south africa. My doctor prescribed forxiga which I take in the evening as an extra medicine, apart from metformin 1g 2 x a day and diaglucide Mr. 60 mg once daily. Our medical refuse to pay for forxiga and my gp doesn't know what other option the is but to put me on insulin. He says that will not solve my problem. My sugar has come down considerable and i'm feeling much better. I have changed my diet and exercise daily as was suggested. Is there anything you can suggest?

Hello, thanks for the query. The forxiga (dapagliflozin) belongs to a comparatively newer class of drugs called sglt - 2 inhibitors. There are other similar molecules like campagliflozin, canagliflozin. I am not sure if any othese drugs are being considered by the insurance companies. You may check the same. If none of those molecules are covered then doctor may look at dpp - iv inhibitors like saxagliptin, vildagliptin, linagliptin and tenelegliptin as alternative. Thanks.
